Legal Document

The L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center's Legal Services Department can help you if:

  • You been discriminated against because of your gender identity and/or sexual orientation;

  • You have been the victim of partner abuse, harassment or hate violence;
  • You need assistance with an immigration problem or are working to become a citizen;

  • You want information about how to legally protect yourself and/or your partner;

  • You are transgender and want help related to  preparing for or finding employment
  • Or if you have questions about other aspects of the law.

  • Legal Clinic Hate Crimes

    The Center’s Legal Clinic offers one-on-one attorney consultations on a no- or low-cost basis to those who need counsel regarding a wide-range of legal issues, including business, civil rights, consumer, criminal, employment, family, government benefits, immigration, insurance, landlord/tenant issues, personal injury, and wills and estates.

    People who are or are perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and/or HIV-positive are often targeted for hate crimes and hate incidents. If you have been the victim of violence, threats, harassment or vandalism, the Center’s Anti-Violence Project can help you.

    Document Preparation

    Domestic Violence

    Need help preparing legal documents? The Center’s Pro Per Project can provide no- or low-cost assistance to assist you prepare legal documents related to a name or gender change or a restraining order.

    Certain fees do apply but may be waived if your income and assets fall below a certain level. There may be a maximum income or asset limits for some services.

    Domestic abuse is a pattern of behavior in which a partner or former partner tries to control thoughts, beliefs or actions and may include physical, sexual and /or economic abuse.  The Center’s Domestic Violence Legal Advocacy Project provides culturally competent legal assistance to LGBT domestic violence victims.

    Transgender Economic Empowerment Project  HIV & AIDS Legal Issues

    TEEP empowers transgender women and men by helping them find employment, develop their professional skills and thrive in the workplace.

    Services include:

    • One-on-one sessions with a client advocate
    • Help setting and achieving career goals
    • Job interview workshops
    • Help crafting a powerful resume
    • Name and gender change, criminal record expungement, and other legal assistance, both employment and non-employment related.
    • Documentation of violence, harassment and bigotry.
    L.A. is soon to have a new HIV legal service organization that's supported by the Center. When it is up and running, we'll share contact information for it here. Until then, please call is for help, including referrals.

    Lawyer Referral Service

    If you can afford to pay for an attorney, our State Bar-certified Lawyer Referral Service (LRS#0041) can refer you to an experienced attorney. There is a $25 processing fee, which entitles the client to an initial visit with the referral attorney.
