Baby Dragon 180 Ride
Dear Family and Friends,
On October 17-18, 2009, while many of you will be participating on the AIDS Walk, I will be participating in the inaugural Baby Dragon 180 Ride, by cycling from L.A. to Santa Barbara and back to raise funds for critical and life-saving programs at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center.
The Baby Dragon 180 Ride was developed to raise funds to provide mental health and crystal meth recovery services, as well as to help LGBT youth. After the tragic loss of Hunter Allen (whose nickname was Baby Dragon and who many of you may have known), a loved one in the AIDS Life Cycle community, family and friends created The Baby Dragon Fund to help those in our community, especially youth, find alternatives when dealing with addiction and mental health issues. The Baby Dragon 180 Ride was established to enhance the funding of these very important programs.
The Baby Dragon represents:
· Anyone who displays valor in the face of addiction
· Anyone who breaks out of the repressive shell of mental illness
· Anyone with a fire in their belly to stand up for who they are regardless of the consequences
Crystal meth addiction has become (along with the continuing challenge of HIV & AIDS) perhaps the most challenging issue facing the gay male community in the 21st Century. There is hardly a person in our worlds who has not been affected, at least peripherally, by it's strong reach.
Could you please help me make a difference for the many people the Center serves in our community?
So far I have raised $300 and I need to get to $1,000 by next weekend.
You can donate to me here: http://www.lagaycenter.org/goto/blacklow1
(all donations are full tax deductible, of course!)
Collectively, the 50 riders participating in the inaugural Baby Dragon have raised $50,000. The goal is to get to $70,000.
If I could get everyone on our Gang of 100 List-serve to give $20, I could reach my goal in order to participate. It's been really difficult to ask for money again, when I already ask every spring for the AIDS LifeCycle (which I'll be doing for the third year in 2010!), but I must ask. It's an important cause and we're trying to help a department of LAGLC that has never had this kind of help before (and desperately needs it, due to 2009 CA state fiscal budget cuts).
Friends as you all know that's 2 drinks out on a Friday night.
Whatever you can give will be appreciated, and everything helps. To learn more about the programs at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center, please visit http://www.lagaycenter.org.
Thank you for your support.
- Jeremy
